A few days ago, news broke of BYD recalling almost 100,000 units of the BYD Dolphin and Yuan Plus – sold as the Atto 3 on our shores – over a potential fire risk in China. Well, Sime Darby Motors, the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Malaysia, confirmed that the Atto 3 and Dolphin sold on our shores are not affected by the recall.
“As the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Malaysia, Sime Darby Motors would like to reassure our valued customers that the BYD models sold in Malaysia are not affected by the recent recall announcement by BYD in China as it is limited exclusively to vehicles sold in the China market,” the company said in a statement.
“The batches and models recalled within the China mainland region do not pertain to markets outside of the China mainland region,” the statement continued.
To recap, the fire risk of the Atto 3 and Dolphin in China is attributed to defects in the manufacturing process of the electric power steering column assembly (CEPS) controller. The recall involves over 96,714 units of the two EVs, which is BYD’s biggest recall yet.
It’s good to know that Malaysian units of the BYD Atto 3 and Dolphin are not affected by the recall in China. This can be attributed to the fact that we are a right-hand drive market, while the models sold in BYD’s home country are left-hand drive units.
