BYD just announced that the 500,000 unit of the BYD Dolphin EV rolled off the production line on 22 September a few days ago. According to the Chinese carmaker, the Dolphin is China’s best-selling hatchback in the A0-segment – a size classification used in the country – for 19 consecutive months now.
Launched in Malaysia just a couple of months ago, two variants of the Dolphin are offered locally. The Dynamic Standard Range model is priced at RM99,900, while the more powerful Premium Extended Range trim goes for RM124,900. Do note that these prices do not include on-the-road costs, so the “real” pricing of the Dynamic and Premium models are RM100,530 and RM125,530 respectively.

For that kind of money, the Dolphin is quite a well-equipped EV. Regardless of which model you go for, both variants of the electric hatchback feature a suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), which include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping support, and even a 360-degree camera. It also comes with six airbags and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
Performance wise, the base Dynamic variant of the Dolphin features a single electric motor driving the front wheels that produces 94PS and 180Nm of torque, which allows it to go from 0-100kmph in 12.3 seconds. Packed with a 44.9kW battery, this variant has a range of up to 410km (NEDC) or 340km (WLTP).
As for the Premium Dolphin, it has a more powerful motor (also driving the front wheels) that outputs 204PS and 310Nm of torque with a 0-100kmph time of only 7 seconds. It has a larger 60.48kW battery too with a maximum range of 490km (NEDC) or 427km (WLTP) on a single charge.

The BYD Dolphin is now available for booking in Malaysia from RM99,900 for the base Dynamic model, going up to RM124,900 for the higher-end Premium variant. You can find BYD’s list of dealers on its official website.
