All Tesla Cybertruck produced has been recalled in the US for a faulty accelerator pedal, which can cause the pedal to be stuck. This involves 3,878 units of the Cybertruck delivered in its home market between 13 November 2023 to 4 April 2024.
According to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the pad of the Cybertruck’s accelerator pedal can dislodge when high force is applied that may cause the pedal to “become trapped in the interior trim above the pedal.” A Cybertruck owner on TikTok (embedded below) shows how the issue can occur.
In the same NHTSA report, it mentions that the fault is caused by an unapproved change in the assembly process of the Cybertruck, which involves the use of soap to put the pad onto the accelerator pedal. This, in turn, reduces the retention of the pad to the pedal.
According to Tesla, it is not aware of any accident involving the Cybertruck that is caused by the faulty accelerator pedal, as reported by The Verge. It’s also worth noting that if the pedal does get stuck, applying the brakes will still cut off the throttle. Still not exactly an ideal workaround, of course.
