Huawei Nova 5T Debuts in Malaysia; Kirin 980, Quad Camera, RM1,599 Price Tag

Phone makers don’t often hold the global unveiling of their devices here in Malaysia, but Huawei did just that today with the brand new Huawei Nova 5T. Compared to other devices in the Nova series, the 5T is actually pretty well equipped; it’s even powered by the same chipset found in the flagship Huawei P30 and Mate 20 devices.

Under the hood of the Nova 5T is a Kirin 980 chipset, which is currently Huawei’s best SoC to date. Built on a 7nm process, it is also quite power efficient. This, in turn, should translate to good battery life, especially with the phone’s 3,750mAh battery.

Aside from that, the Nova 5T also comes with a 6.26-inch 1080p LTPS display with a hole-punch cutout on the left side of the screen. According to Huawei, this phone has an impressive 91.7% screen-to-body ratio. On top of that, compared to a notch, the hole-punch cutout takes up less space, so it should be less distracting.

For photography, the Nova 5T is packed with a quad camera system. It’s made up of a 48MP primary shooter, a 16MP wide angle camera, a 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. The front-facing shooter, on the other hand, is a 32MP unit.

Rounding out the specifications of the Nova 5T are 8GB of RAM, 128GB of fast UFS 2.1 storage – albeit there’s no support for expandable storage – as well as EMUI 9.1 based on Android 9 Pie out of the box. Now, looking at the hardware and design of the Nova 5T, you won’t be wrong if this smartphone seems…familiar.

See, it is essentially a Huawei-branded Honor 20; even the side-mounted fingerprint sensor of the device is found on the 5T. Given that both companies are affiliated with each other, this isn’t exactly a surprise. But there is one distinct difference: the Nova 5T comes with 8GB of RAM, while the Honor 20 only has 6GB RAM.

The Huawei Nova 5T will be available for pre-order in Malaysia from 29 August to 5 September for RM1,599, which is really quite a competitive price tag. Those who place their pre-orders in this period will also receive two Huawei Mini Bluetooth speakers, a SuperCharge car charger, and one-year extended warranty.

Three distinct colours of the Nova 5T are available for the Malaysian market: Midsummer Purple, Crush Blue, and Black. Our hands-on of the latest Nova smartphone will be up shortly, so keep your eyes peeled!
