Talks of a merger between Honda and Nissan have been reignited since the two Japanese carmakers agreed to a strategic partnership for EVs back in March this year. This partnership is said to help both companies compete in the EV space, especially in the highly competitive China market.
If the merger between Honda and Nissan does happen, Mitsubishi will likely be roped in as well. Nissan is Mitsubishi’s biggest shareholder, and all three carmakers actually agreed to “discuss a framework for further intelligence and electrification of automobiles” in August 2024.
However, it’s worth noting that the discussions between Honda and Nissan are said to still be in the early stages, and there is no guarantee that a deal will materialise. But if the merger does happen, it would help the Japanese carmakers to take on bigger competition in the EV space, including the likes of BYD and Tesla.
Back here in Malaysia, Honda will actually introduce its first-ever EV for our local market in 2025 next year in the form of the Honda e:N1. Nissan, on the other hand, is pushing its e-Power hybrid technology on our shores. It’s still too early to say if Honda and Nissan will eventually merge, but it’s certainly an interesting prospect.
