At the tabling of Budget 2025, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim mentioned that Perodua is planning to release an EV below the RM100,000 price point. He added that the current tax incentives for EV in Malaysia have also been structured to encourage the switch to locally assembled (CKD) EVs.
It’s worth noting that Perodua have previously confirmed that its first-ever EV – which is set to be released sometime in 2025 – will retail below RM100,000. The President and CEO of Perodua himself, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, mentioned this back at Malaysia Autoshow 2024. In fact, he said that the first Perodua EV will be priced between RM50,000 to RM100,000.
It remains to be seen just what body style Perodua’s first EV will be sporting, though the carmaker has used the hugely popular Myvi as a basis for its EV concepts over the past couple of years. If we were to take a guess, we’d say an electric hatchback is on the cards for Perodua. Of course, this is only an educated guess on our part.
Beyond Perodua’s EV, Anwar also elaborated that the current RM2,400 rebate on electric bikes will be continued in 2025 with an allocation of RM10 million. As previously revealed by the government, the RM2,400 rebate only applies to those who earn less than RM120,000 a year.
