Apple Collecting More Maps Data Around Malaysia With a Backpack Until December 2024
October 18, 2024 Andrew Cheng

Apple previously shared that it was collecting data for Apple Maps between November 2023 to July 2024 throughout Malaysia. Now, the Cupertino company is gathering even more data locally, but this time around, it will be done with a backpack system.

First spotted by SoyaCincau, Apple updated its Maps image collection webpage to reflect the latest round of data collection. More specifically, the backpack system will be used to capture pedestrian data in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Johor, and Penang. Chances are, the data will be used for the Look Around feature, which is not offered yet on our shores.

For those who are wondering, yes, Apple Maps’ Look Around feature is similar to Google Street View, though Apple’s implementation in its Maps app does feel more intuitive to use, in our opinion. The company will begin its data collection in the aforementioned locations from today (18 October) until 31 December 2024.

The full schedule for the latest round of data collection for Apple Maps can be found here. If you’re lucky, you may be able to spot the backpack system Apple will be using to collect its maps data. Of course, in the interest of privacy, faces, license plates, and other private information on images published in Look Around will be censored. Currently, the Look Around feature is offered in selected countries, including Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and of course, the US.
