Several units of the Geely Galaxy E5 have made their way to Malaysia after completing a world tour – as the carmaker puts it – from China to our shores. The E5 is essentially the upcoming Proton e.MAS 7‘s twin, so the EV does give us an idea of how the first Malaysian EV will look like without camouflage.
In China, the Galaxy E5 proved to be a hot-selling EV. According to Geely, the E5 is the fastest-selling electric SUV in its segment, surpassing over 20,000 deliveries. The E5 is also quite affordable in its home market, with five different variants that are priced from 112,800 Chinese yuan (about RM67,180) to 148,800 yuan (approximately RM88,625).
Side-by-side, both the Galaxy E5 and e.MAS 7 look…well, identical. Granted, this particular unit of the E5 comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, while the e.MAS 7 prototype is equipped with 18-inch wheels – complete with Proton’s branding. Aside from that, there are also several items exclusive to the Proton EV, including the Proton brandings on the front and back of the SUV.
At this moment, the interior of the e.MAS 7 has not been shown to the public yet, which is why the cabin of the Galaxy E5 is particularly interesting. Of course, the E5 is in left-hand drive, though it’s worth noting that the e.MAS 7 prototype is already in right-hand drive form. This is evident from the orientation of the front wipers.
While it’s still too early to say, we reckon the interior of the e.MAS 7 will be similar to the Galaxy E5’s cabin. However, we have a feeling Proton will opt for a darker interior for its EV – this was the case with the Proton S70, for example.
The Proton e.MAS 7 will go on a tour around Malaysia from 5 October next week ahead of its December debut. The electric SUV will cover 2,000km of travel, starting with Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, and Johor. The tour will then move on to Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan, followed by the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia (Perak, Penang, Kedah, and Perlis).
After that, the e.MAS 7 will return back to KL and Selangor before making its way to East Malaysia; the EV will go around Sabah first before concluding the tour in Sarawak.
