Proton e.MAS 7 Makes Public Debut This Saturday at Merdeka Day Parade
August 28, 2024 Andrew Cheng

The Proton e.MAS 7 EV will be making its first-ever public debut on 31 August! The national carmaker will be showing off the electric SUV at the Merdeka Day parade this Saturday, and it will join Proton’s 25-car contingent made up of the original Proton Saga up to the recently launched 2025 Proton X70.

However, the e.MAS 7 will still be covered in a camouflage during the parade, given that it is not the final production vehicle. “It will be displayed wearing camouflage, but in the National Day spirit, we have chosen colours that represent Malaysia’s flag,” said the CEO of Proton, Li Chunrong.

Set to be the first EV from a Malaysian carmaker, the e.MAS 7 really is shaping up to be the Proton’s most anticipated model yet. It’s worth noting that this is not a “rebadge” exercise either – the C-segment electric SUV is said to be co-developed by Proton and Geely.

“The e.MAS 7 is not only Proton’s first EV, but it is also the first Proton model developed concurrently with the team at Geely. This allows for much shorter lead times in making RHD versions available and also results in greater efficiencies and sharing of development costs,” the CEO of Proton emphasised in the press release.

In fact, between Proton and Geely, over 700,000 manhours and 10 million kilometre of testing have been done for the e.MAS 7 to date. Several specifications of the EV that were detailed at the media preview match that of the Galaxy E5’s too, so it’s likely the two models share similar features.

Proton has not revealed the power output of the e.MAS 7, though the Galaxy E5 does feature a front-mounted electric motor that can do 218PS (160 kW) and 320Nm of torque. This allows the electric SUV to sprint from 0-100kmph in 6.9 second, and chances are, the e.MAS 7 will share the same drivetrain.

As Proton have previously announced, the Proton e.MAS 7 will make its debut sometime in December 2024. If you want to see the EV in person – even though it will still be covered in camouflage – you can do so at the Merdeka Day parade on 31 August this Saturday.
