PS5 Now Starts at RM1,830 in Malaysia for Merdeka
August 27, 2024 Andrew Cheng

We’re celebrating our 67th Merdeka this Saturday, and in conjunction with that, PlayStation is running a promotion for the PS5 in Malaysia. Originally starting at RM2,069, the console can now be purchased from only RM1,830 on our shores until 1 September 2024.

Of course, this price tag is for the PS5 Digital Edition, which receives a sizeable RM239 discount, lowering the price to RM1,830. As for the standard model, it gets the same RM239 markdown, bringing the price to only RM2,260. It’s worth noting that these discounts are for the newer, slimmer version of the PS5 too instead of the first generation model.

Compared to the original PS5, the new model “has been reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models,” as PlayStation puts it. It is also shorter and slimmer by 33mm and 44mm respectively, and it has four separate cover panels now – the bottom covers are still finished in matte, while the top covers are glossy.

On top of that, the new PS5 is equipped with a larger 1TB SSD compared to the previous model’s 825GB drive; the Blu-ray disc drive for the standard model can be detached as well. Curiously, only a horizontal stand is provided with the updated console. A new vertical stand, which is also compatible with the original PS5, is now sold separately.

To recap, the PS5 now retails at RM1,830 and RM2,260 for the Digital Edition and standard models respectively for Merdeka. These discounted prices, which are offered at selected retailers, are valid until 1 September this Sunday, so you may want to be quick if you want to enjoy the Merdeka offer.
