Perodua continues to record strong booking numbers despite the reinstatement of sales tax on new car orders from 1 July 2022. Last month alone, the national carmaker recorded 24,265 bookings; 9,000 of them were for the 2022 Perodua Alza.
With that in mind, bookings for the new Alza now stands at a whopping 39,000 units. Given that Perodua was only aiming to sell 3,000 units of the MPV every month, it’s clear that demand for the updated Alza exceeds the company’s expectations.
Even though Perodua’s booking numbers look good, its sales actually went down last month compared to June 2022. “Our month-to-month sales were reduced by 13.3% to 18,346 units in July compared with 21,164 units registered in June this year,” said the president and CEO of Perodua, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad.
According to Zainal, this is attributed to “lingering issues in the automotive ecosystem last month, which include shortage of labour and residual semiconductor supply availability.” He added that Perodua is working closely with the government to overcome the labour shortage by early August.
Once that’s settled, Perodua expects its production to resume in full from this month onwards. If you’ve been eagerly waiting to receive your new Perodua car, you may not have to wait too long now.
