Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra – How Good Is the Camera’s Zoom Performance?
March 25, 2022 Andrew Cheng

One of the most highlighted features of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has to be its quad camera system. Made up of a 108MP primary sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide angle shooter, a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom, and another 10MP lens with 10x optical zoom, this is a sophisticated, far-reaching camera array.

In fact, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, just like its predecessor, can do 100x Space Zoom, which can deliver some interesting results! But just how good is this quad camera configuration? Well, take a look at the sample shots below taken with all four cameras of the flagship phone.

Granted, at 100x zoom, the image quality isn’t great, but I’d argue the 30x zoom shot is still very acceptable. Not many phones can offer such a far-reaching zoom, so this remains to be one of the best qualities of the S22 Ultra. I mean, just look at how far the telephoto lenses managed to zoom in!

In low light conditions, however, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, especially with the 10MP telephoto lens that offers 10x zoom. Because it has a slower f/4.9 aperture, it cannot absorb quite as much light as the other sensors, so it has a tendency to produce noisier low light shots. See for yourself below:

But overall, the Galaxy S22 Ultra still offers excellent camera performance. All four sensors of the quad camera system can take great-looking shots, which is not something that can be said of many other flagship phones.

Yes, the 10x telephoto lens does struggle a bit in nighttime shooting, but it can still return good results most of the time. It also helps that the camera interface itself is responsive in most conditions, not to mention the fact that the camera can lock in focus accurately in a quick manner.

If you want a high-end flagship phone with a sophisticated, far-reaching camera system, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is easily one of the best – if not the best – options in the market now. If you’d like to learn more about this premium phone, check out our full review of the S22 Ultra.
