Still waiting to get the Proton X50? Well, if you’re afraid Proton’s export plans will affect local delivery of the B-segment SUV, you can rest easy now. Even though the national carmaker is focusing quite a bit on export markets this year, the X50’s production will still be catered to the Malaysian market.

In a statement sent out to Paul Tan, Proton said that its main priority right now is to “deliver cars for domestic market orders first and to address the waiting times currently faced by our customers.” Given that the waiting period for the SUV now stands at over six months – some customers have waited even longer than that – this is a good move.

Of course, Proton added that the X50 will eventually be exported to other markets. This includes Pakistan, though no tentative timeline was given. Once the B-segment SUV is introduced there, it will also be locally assembled alongside the X70 and Saga – the CKD production of the latter two in Pakistan are set to begin sometime in Q3 2021.

Back here in Malaysia, Proton is ramping up production of the X50 to meet consumer demand. With over 3,513 units of the SUV delivered in March last month, the national carmaker said that this is already “above the initial planned capacity.” Throughout the year, the production capacity of the X50 will be increased even further too.
