3,787 Proton X50 Delivered in 2020; Ranked Third in B-Segment SUV Market
January 4, 2021 Andrew Cheng

Proton just released its full sales figure for 2020, and we got some interesting details from the report. The Proton X50, for one, was delivered to 3,787 lucky owners in 2020. This is enough to make the X50 the third most popular B-segment SUV in Malaysia.

Given that the X50 was only launched in late October last year, the fact that it managed to place third in the B-segment SUV market for 2020 is quite impressive. While it falls short of the 4,000 units Proton was aiming for, 3,787 units delivered isn’t too far off the mark. “The X50 surpassed expectations despite its later than planned arrival,” Proton said in the press release.

With over 30,000 bookings placed for the SUV – as confirmed by the national carmaker – this is certainly the case. Moving forward, we reckon the X50 will sit at the top of the B-segment SUV market in 2021, assuming Proton can meet customer demand. Now that the government’s sales tax exemption for locally assembled (CKD) and fully imported (CBU) cars have been extended to 30 June 2021, the carmaker definitely has more breathing room to fulfill the rest of the 30,000 bookings.

Aside from that, three other Proton models lead their respective segments in 2020. These include the Proton X70 (21,944 units), Proton Persona (23,917 units), and Proton Exora (5,849 units). As for the Iriz, 7,636 units were sold, ranking it third in the B-segment hatchback market. The Saga, on the other hand, is the most popular Proton model with 46,527 units delivered; it sits in the second position in the A-segment sedan market.

Collectively, Proton sold over 109,716 cars in 2020, which is an improvement of 8.8% compared to its 2019 sales figure of 100,821 units sold. With the hugely popular X50, X70, and the soon-to-be released R3-branded Iriz and Saga – not to mention the Persona and Iriz facelifts – in its product lineup, Proton may just achieve higher sales numbers in 2021.
