Asus TUF Gaming A15 & A17 Coming in May 2020; First Ryzen 4000 Gaming Laptops in Malaysia
April 22, 2020 Andrew Cheng

We’ve just received word that Asus is bringing in two of its latest gaming laptops to Malaysia: the Asus TUF Gaming A15 and A17. Initially unveiled at CES 2020, these products are set to be the first AMD Ryzen 4000 gaming laptops to reach our shores, and that’s quite a big deal.

Compared to Intel’s offerings, the new Ryzen 4000 processors – which are based on the chipmaker’s Zen 2 architecture – can deliver excellent performance in a power-efficient package. After all, AMD’s new mobile chips are fabricated on a 7nm process, giving them superior performance per watt than the competition.

Anyway, for both the TUF Gaming A15 and A17, they can be configured with either a Ryzen 9 4900H, Ryzen 7 4800H, or Ryzen 5 4600H processor. It remains to be seen exactly which option will be available here in Malaysia, but there’s a good chance the Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 models will be brought in first. The former is actually quite exciting: early benchmarks have shown that the Ryzen 7 chip is quite the performer.

But what impacts gaming performance the most is the GPU, and in this regard, the TUF Gaming A15 comes with either an Nvidia RTX 2060 or a GTX 1660 Ti GPU. The TUF Gaming A17, on the other hand, is listed only with a GTX 1660 Ti option.

Regardless, both of these GPUs are powerful enough to handle most – if not all – AAA titles with high graphics settings. The performance disparity between the two are not that big either if you don’t care about RTX-specific features like ray tracing.

More and more gaming laptops are now shipping with fast displays, and the same applies to the TUF Gaming A15 and A17. The A15 comes with a 15.6-inch 1080p “IPS-level” screen with a fast 144Hz refresh rate, and there is also a 60Hz option. The A17, on the other hand, has a larger 17.3-inch panel with a 120Hz or 60Hz refresh rate.

Other specifications of the TUF Gaming A15 and A17 include up to 32GB of DDR4 3200MHz RAM, up to 1TB of PCIe 3.0 SSD, two SSD slots for storage expansion as and when necessary, and of course, these wouldn’t be gaming laptops without an RGB keyboard.

The Asus TUF Gaming A15 and A17 are expected to arrive here in Malaysia sometime next month in May 2020. No local pricing have been revealed yet, though it’s worth noting that the TUF Gaming lineup usually offers good value for money, such as the FX505 we reviewed a while ago.
