Many customers are eagerly waiting to take delivery of their Proton X50, which is proving to the one of the most popular B-segment SUVs in the market now. Unfortunately, according to Proton, the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) have delayed the production of the X50.

In an interview with The Malaysian Reserve, the CEO of Proton Edar, Roslan Abdullah, revealed that 3,200 units of the X50 have been delivered to customers. Besides that, total bookings of the SUV have passed the 30,000 mark too. Clearly, the X50 is a highly sought-after model.

However, due to CMCO and the closure of international borders, it is difficult to secure parts necessary for the production of the X50. “We have about 60 local vendors for the X50, of which one had to shut down operations as a COVID-19 cluster was detected in the area. This is affecting the supply chain and we cannot simply make substitutes as we need to maintain the quality promised to the customers,” said Roslan.

Roslan further elaborated that Proton is looking to deliver the X50 for existing bookings within the next two months. Those who made new bookings, on the other hand, would need to wait between three to four months for the SUV. Pretty optimistic timelines in our opinion, but that’s what the national carmaker is aiming for.

Nonetheless, now that the sales tax exemption for locally assembled (CKD) and fully imported (CBU) cars have been extended to 30 June 2021, there should be ample time for Proton to deliver the X50 to customers who want to take advantage of the discount. Hopefully, those who placed their bookings on 16 September itself will get the B-segment SUV very, very soon.
