Proton X50 “Tuned for Malaysian Roads,” But Without Proton Ride & Handling
September 23, 2020 Andrew Cheng

Even though the Proton X50 is already available for booking now, there are still quite a number of details regarding the B-segment SUV that have not been revealed yet – including its pricing. Nonetheless, in a closed-door preview event for the X50, the national carmaker did share more details: the new model is supposedly “tuned for Malaysian roads.”

According to Proton, over 75,000 man hours of testing were poured into the X50, with over 1.9 million km of local road testing conducted to tune the SUV for our roads. Evidently, a lot of work went into the local development of the X50, which is actually still ongoing, according to Paul Tan.

On top of that, Proton also confirmed with Paul Tan that the X50 – even though it’s tuned for our roads – doesn’t exactly come with the carmaker’s famed ride and handling. Instead, the tuning involves minor adjustments, just like how it was with the CKD version of the Proton X70.

Of course, it would’ve been great if the X50 came with Proton’s ride and handling, but it’s still undeniably a very complete B-segment SUV, especially the range-topping Flagship model. It’s the only variant to get the 1.5L TGDi three-cylinder engine, which outputs 177PS and 255Nm of torque, along with an Advanced Driver Assistance System that includes parking assist and adaptive cruise control.

The Proton X50 is available for booking right now for only RM500. It remains to be seen exactly when the official launch for the highly anticipated B-segment SUV will take place, though there’s a good chance it will happen next month in October.
