WhatsApp Finally Allows Chat History Transfers Between iOS & Android…Sort Of

One of the biggest pain points of WhatsApp when you’re changing phones is finally addressed; well, sort of. Beginning with Samsung’s new foldable phones, the Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3, you will be able to transfer your chat history from an iOS device.

Unfortunately, this is the limit of the new feature at the moment. The ability to transfer chat history from iOS and other Samsung phones – aside from the new foldables – will be possible “in the coming weeks,” but it will be limited to Samsung devices that are running Android 10 and above.

Eventually, this feature will be extended to all Android devices, though it remains to be seen exactly how long until this will be rolled out to other devices. On top of that, there’s no tentative timeline as to when it will be possible to transfer chat history from Android to iOS either, unfortunately enough.

Anyway, in order to transfer the chat history from iOS to the new Samsung foldable phones, you’ll need a Lightning to USB-C cable. That’s right, the transfer is done completely offline, which makes sense, given that Android and iOS devices back up chat history to Google Drive and iCloud respectively.
