Samsung just revealed more details on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2; more specifically, its retail price and availability in the US. Set to go for $2,000 – that comes up to about RM8,300 – the foldable phone is set to be available in the States from 18 September onwards.
For context, this price tag is actually identical to the asking price of the original Galaxy Fold in the US, which suggests that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 could be priced similarly to its predecessor here in Malaysia. Although the local availability of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 has not been confirmed yet, we’re confident the foldable phone will be landing on our shores very soon.
After all, the product page for the Z Fold 2 is already live on Samsung Malaysia’s website.
Compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 comes with a number of notable improvements. The so-called “cover screen” on the front of the foldable phone, for one, has been upsized to a much more sizeable (and practical) 6.2-inch 2260 x 816 Super AMOLED display.
In fact, the much bigger exterior display of the Z Fold 2 covers almost the entire front of the phone with tiny bezels and a hole-punch cutout for the 10MP selfie camera. While this gives the device a much sleeker, modern aesthetic, it’s also a very tall, narrow panel with a 25:9 aspect ratio. Until we have the phone in for review, we can’t say just how usable this screen is yet.
Anyway, the primary foldable screen of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is now bigger too. It is a 7.6-inch 2208 x 1768 Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with a faster 120Hz refresh rate, which should make for an even more pleasant user experience. The weird cutout at the top right corner of the screen for the selfie cameras is gone as well. Samsung is using a less obtrusive hole-punch cutout for the single 10MP front-facing camera now.
It’s also worth noting that the Z Fold 2’s foldable screen is protected by Samsung’s Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), just like the Galaxy Z Flip. However, the glass itself is still covered with a plastic protective layer. You won’t actually be able to feel the glass material.
Other specifications of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ chipset, 5G connectivity, a triple camera system (12MP f/1.8 primary + 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle + 12MP f/2.4 telephoto), 12GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage, a 4,500mAh battery, as well as a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.
To recap, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 will start shipping on 18 September in the US for $2,000. Malaysian pricing and availability have not been announced yet, but we reckon it will be available here in the near future.
