The Samsung Galaxy Fold had a rocky launch earlier this year, but that hasn’t stopped the Korean company from going ahead with the launch of its foldable smartphone in Malaysia this month. That’s right, the Galaxy Fold will be arriving on our shores very soon, and you can bet it will cost a small fortune.

If you haven’t been following news surrounding the Galaxy Fold, here’s a summary. The first iteration of the Fold was more fragile than expected, with reports of the display being damaged after regular use. Besides that, some folks tried to peel off what seemed like a screen protector, only to find out that it’s actually a part of the display’s structure after the screen started malfunctioning.

These reports were widespread and worrying enough for Samsung to put a hold on the launch of the Galaxy Fold for a few months. Come September, the phone maker unveiled the redesigned Galaxy Fold at IFA 2019. For the most part, it’s the same device, but with some important changes here and there.

Now, there are plastic bits surrounding the display of the Fold to prevent dust and debris from getting underneath the screen. The top protective layer has also been extended to go under the bezels, so it won’t be possible – or at the very least, a lot more difficult – to peel off. The hinge supposedly feels more durable now too, and the gaps around the device have been reduced as well.

Beyond these changes, the fixed Galaxy Fold has the same hardware as the original model. These include a 7.3-inch 2152 x 1536 Dynamic AMOLED primary display, a smaller 4.6-inch screen on the outside of the device, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset – despite the fact that the faster Snapdragon 855+ is already available now – paired with 12GB of RAM, and 512GB of internal storage.

Rounding out the specifications of this foldable phone are a triple camera system (12MP primary + 16MP ultra-wide angle + 12MP telephoto), two front-facing shooters (10MP main + 8MP depth), a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and a 4,380mAh battery.

Even though the Samsung Galaxy Fold is confirmed to be arriving in Malaysia this month, there is still no specific launch date for the foldable smartphone. Samsung did, however, mention that the pre-order campaign for the Fold is “coming soon.”

Rest assured, we will keep a close eye on the local availability of the Galaxy Fold, especially the Malaysian pricing of the device. As a point of comparison, the phone costs a whopping $1,980 in the US, which comes up to about RM8,305. Chances are, the Fold will be priced in the same region once it’s available here.
