Redmi Note 9S Arrives in Malaysia for RM799; Rebranded Redmi Note 9 Pro

The Redmi Note 9 series was launched in India just a couple of weeks ago, and it was also registered with SIRIM at the same time, so we expected the new mid-range smartphone to arrive in Malaysia very soon. Well, here we are: the Redmi Note 9S has just landed on our shores.

Given its different moniker from the other Redmi Note 9 smartphones, the Note 9S is technically the third entry in the series. But a closer look at its list of hardware reveal that it’s basically a rebranded Redmi Note 9 Pro. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though it is a tad confusing.

Anyway, the Redmi Note 9S, like the rest of the devices in the lineup, features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G chipset, which should be able to offer a reasonably good level of performance. Besides that, it also has a 6.67-inch 2400 x 1080 IPS screen with a hole-punch cutout at the top of the screen for the 16MP selfie camera.

Design wise, the Redmi Note 9S is (unsurprisingly) identical to the Redmi Note 9 phones launched two weeks earlier. Compared to its predecessors, the Note 9S is a much sleeker-looking smartphone. As mentioned, it now has a hole-punch display instead of a notched one, and the vertically stacked camera module of the previous model is replaced with a square one.

Speaking of which, the Redmi Note 9S comes with a quad camera system. It consists of a 48MP f/1.79 primary shooter, an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle camera, a 5MP f/2.4 macro lens, and a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor. Unfortunately, the Note 9S, just like its predecessor, doesn’t offer a telephoto shooter.

Redmi Note smartphones are usually packed with sizeable batteries, and this trend continues with the Redmi Note 9S. Thanks to its generous 5,020mAh battery – with support for 18W fast charging – you should be able to get very respectable battery life with this smartphone; maybe even up to two days of usage.

Rounding out the specifications of the Redmi Note 9S include 4GB or 6GB of RAM, two storage capacities (64GB or 128GB), a microSD card slot, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and MIUI 11 based on Android 10 out of the box.

Two variants of the Redmi Note 9S are offered in Malaysia: the base 64GB model with 4GB of RAM is priced at RM799, while the 128GB option with 6GB of RAM retails at RM899. All three colourways of the phone are available here, which include Aurora Blue, Glacier White, and Interstellar Black. The 64GB model can be purchased from 27 March onwards, while the 128GB variant will be sold on 1 April.
