Proton’s Sales Drop 32.2% in April 2022 Due to Chip Shortage

Chip shortage continues to be an issue for many carmakers, and Proton is no exception. In April 2022 last month, the national carmaker sees its sales drop by a steep 32.2% due to chip supply issues.

Despite the chip shortage, three Proton models continue to lead their respective segments. These include the highly popular X50 (1,554 units), X70 (1,530 units), and the Exora (301 units). The Saga was Proton’s best-selling model last month with 4,579 units sold, though it sits at the second spot in the A-segment sedan market.

Thankfully, Proton said that it has secured enough chips for May and June 2022, and it is projecting a quick turnaround in the coming months. But the carmaker added that “the situation is still uncertain for the rest of the year and the global car industry is under pressure from rising costs.”

“The company is working on countermeasures against these issues to ensure our customers get the best products and value in Malaysia and abroad,” said the CEO of Proton Edar, Roslan Abdullah.

With the launch of the new 2022 Proton Saga MC2 set for 12 May this Thursday, we reckon the national carmaker’s sales will see an encouraging growth for the coming months. Learn more about the new Saga facelift right here.
