Proton X50 Finally Teased in Merdeka Video

The wait for Proton’s highly anticipated B-segment compact SUV – widely believed to be called the Proton X50 – may be coming to an end very soon. The national carmaker just posted a video to celebrate Malaysia’s 63rd Merdeka Day, and surprise surprise, the X50 is teased quite a bit in the video.

Of course, we only get quick shots and glances at the upcoming SUV with a blue paint job. As expected, the X50 looks very similar to the model it is based on, the Geely Binyue. The video shows these similarities, including the LED headlights, alloy wheels, and of course, even the quad exhaust tips.

According to rumours, three different trims of the Proton X50 will be introduced. All of them are said to be powered by a 1.5L turbocharged engine co-developed by both Geely and Volvo, which outputs 174hp and 255Nm of torque. Needless to say, this is quite a powerful engine, especially for a B-segment SUV.

As for the transmission, the X50 is believed to be equipped with the same seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox as its bigger brother, the Proton X70. This transmission, like the engine, is also co-developed by Geely and Volvo. According to official performance figure of the Geely Binyue in other markets – which has the same engine and gearbox combination – it can do the century sprint in only 7.9 seconds.

Now that Proton has finally teased the Proton X50, there’s a good chance the compact SUV will be officially introduced very soon. Rest assured, we will keep a close eye on this.
