Proton continues its strong sales numbers in the month of August 2020. With 11,378 units sold last month, it was the national carmaker’s second best month, right behind July’s sales figure of 13,216 units. In fact, Proton is currently 46 units ahead of its 2019 sales in the same period of time.
This is a quite an impressive feat by Proton, given that the automotive industry is adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Evidently, the 2020 sales tax exemption for passenger vehicles introduced by the government is boosting sales quite a bit. According to Proton, its August 2020 sales performance is 24.7% better over the same month in 2019.
Three Proton models also continue to lead their respective segments. The Proton X70, for one, continues to be the best-selling SUV in Malaysia with 2,791 units sold in August 2020. The Persona and Exora, on the other hand, sold 2,411 and 630 units respectively.
“Proton is pleasantly surprised by how quickly we have been able to recover the lost sales during the MCO period, as it only took us three months to get back on track,” said the CEO of Proton Edar, Roslan Abdullah. “We hope to continue this trend until the end of the year so as to give the automotive industry ecosystem a strong boost,” he added.

Given Proton’s sales performance in the past couple of months, it’s likely the national carmaker can maintain this momentum in the coming months; especially with the imminent arrival of its highly anticipated B-segment SUV, the Proton X50.
