We’ve seen a a lot of SUVs enter the Malaysian market these past few months, including the highly anticipated Proton X50. If none of them piqued your interest, Perodua’s upcoming SUV – codenamed D55L – may be the one for you; it’s just been spotted here in Malaysia.
The folks over at Paul Tan managed to get a shot of the Perodua D55L right outside of JPJ’s Putrajaya office. Despite the camouflage, there’s no mistaking it for any other SUV. Compared to the Daihatsu Rocky or Toyota Raize – which the D55L is based on – the camouflaged SUV definitely looks similar.
Seeing how the Perodua D55L will be based on the Daihatsu Rocky, the former should be sporting similar equipment as Daihatsu’s offering. The Rocky sits on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA), and under the hood is a 1.0L turbocharged three-cylinder engine that outputs 98PS and 140Nm of torque. Paired with this engine is a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Aside from that, the Rocky also features a suite of active safety features. These include autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and a parking assist system. It’s not confirmed yet if these features will be made available on the Perodua D55L as well, though it is said to come with level 2 autonomous driving.
The Daihatsu Rocky
The Perodua D55L is expected to be introduced in Malaysia sometime next year in 2021; perhaps in the first quarter of the year. No word yet on exactly how much it will cost, but given its more modest list of equipment, expect the D55L to be more affordable than the Proton X50.
