OnePlus Nord Launching in Malaysia on 18 August

OnePlus finally confirmed the Malaysian launch of its latest mid-range smartphone, the OnePlus Nord. Set to arrive here next week on 18 August, the Nord will compete against other premium mid-range smartphones in Malaysia; its local pricing will determine if it can stand toe-to-toe with them.

The Malaysian launch of the OnePlus Nord is confirmed by the company itself on its Facebook page. Details are light, but the “special launch” event is said to take place on 18 August at 11AM. Chances are, this will be an online-only affair.

What makes the Nord particularly interesting is the whole package it offers. Not only does it sport a premium glass and metal build, it also features a 6.44-inch 1080p AMOLED screen with a 90Hz refresh rate; perfectly suited for a mid-range device like it. There’s also an oblong-shaped hole-punch cutout on the top left of the screen, which houses two selfie cameras.

That’s right, the Nord come with two front-facing shooters. One is a 32MP f/2.45 primary sensor, while the other lens is an 8MP f/2.45 ultra-wide angle lens that’s ideal for capturing wider group selfies. In fact, the ultra-wide angle selfie camera is a first for OnePlus. No other smartphone from the company offers that.

Besides that, powering the Nord is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset, giving the phone a reasonably good level of performance and 5G connectivity. Granted, this is not the fastest processor in the market, but it is Qualcomm’s best SoC outside of the range-topping Snapdragon 8 series chips. That’s a good position to be in.

Other specifications of the Nord include a generous 4,115mAh battery with support for OnePlus’ Warp Charge 30T fast charging technology – it can supposedly charge up the phone to 70% from empty in just 30 minutes – an in-screen fingerprint sensor, and OxygenOS based on Android 10 out of the box.

The OnePlus Nord is set to be launched in Malaysia next week on 18 August. We don’t know yet exactly how much the mid-range smartphone will cost here, but the company already listed two different variants of the Nord on its local Shopee store. Two models of the phone will be offered here: the 128GB variant with 8GB of RAM, and the range-topping 256GB option with 12GB of RAM.

Aside from that, based on the listings, both the Blue Marble and Grey Onyx colourways of the Nord will be available here.
