There aren’t that many AMD Ryzen 4000 laptops in the Malaysian market now – especially in the productivity laptop segment – but we’re getting one new addition from MSI. Enter the MSI Modern 14, which was quietly launched here with a Ryzen 4000 processor earlier this month.
Retailing at RM2,999, the Modern 14 is a reasonably affordable productivity laptop. Only a single configuration of the machine is offered in Malaysia at the moment, which comes with a Ryzen 5 4500U processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD. There is also a RM3,269 model, though it is virtually identical to the aforementioned configuration; only the RAM is upgraded to 16GB.
Anyway, one of the most appealing aspects of the Modern 14 has to be its design. Thanks to the slim bezels surrounding the 14-inch 1920 x 1080 screen, MSI says that this laptop has a “close to 90% screen-to-body ratio.” While the bottom bezel isn’t quite as small, it is minimal enough to give the Modern 14 a modern-looking (excuse the pun) aesthetic. There’s also a webcam located above the screen.
Besides that, the Ryzen 5 4500U hexa-core processor is one of the best reasons to get the Modern 14 as well. Not only does it offer very respectable performance for the money, it is also more power-efficient than its competition. After all, it’s fabricated on a 7nm process, while Intel’s chips in this segment are still built on a 10nm process.
Okay, so what kind of battery life can you expect out of the Modern 14? Well, according to MSI, this laptop’s 50WHr battery can return up to 10 hours of use on a single charge. Sure, it’s not the best battery life for a productivity laptop, but it’s certainly not the worst either.
Productivity laptops have to be compact and portable, and in the case of the Modern 14, it’s a pretty slim and lightweight machine. Its chassis measures 16.9mm thin, and tipping the scales at 1.3kg, you wouldn’t really feel the weight of this laptop in your backpack. This makes it an ideal notebook for those who are always on the go.
The MSI Modern 14 with AMD’s Ryzen 4000 chip is now available for purchase in Malaysia for RM2,999 on MSI’s local online store; RM3,269 if you want to upgrade the RAM to 16GB. According to the listing, every purchase of the Modern 14 will come with a laptop sleeve as well.
