A large number of games have been announced for the PlayStation 5, and one of them is a big one. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be launching alongside the next-generation console later this year. Based on the trailer, it seems to be a continuation of 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, which starred Peter Parker.
Miles Morales assumes the mantle of Spider-Man in this upcoming PS5 game, and compared to the first title, there are some nice visual upgrades. According to PlayStation, the game will have “highly-detailed character models and enhanced visuals across the game (to) intensify the story of Miles Morales as he faces great, new challenges while learning to be his own Spider-Man.”
That being said, based on reports circulating online, Spider-Man: Miles Morales will not be on the same level of scale as the original title. Instead, it’s meant to “build on and expand Marvel’s Spider-Man (the first game) through an all-new story,” as PlayStation puts it.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Spider-Man: Miles Morales will instead “be smaller than a traditional console game but will be sold as a stand-alone product,” citing a person familiar with the development of the new game. This statement is corroborated by the developer itself, Insomniac Games.
The Bloomberg report further added that Spider-Man: Miles Morales will follow the formula of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which is a spin-off of 2016’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. While the former plays similarly to the original, it’s a shorter, smaller experience. Of course, this is reflected in the lower price tag of The Lost Legacy, even if it was a stand-alone game.
This may come off as a disappointment to fans who are hoping for a full-fledged Spider-Man game with Miles Morales. But given that the first one was only released back in September 2018, it’ll be unrealistic to expect a full-fledged sequel in such a short period of time.
Nonetheless, we’re optimistic the new game will give Miles Morales justice as the new Spider-Man. Some of the improvements that we can expect from the upcoming title include “near-instantaneously fast-travel across Marvel’s New York City,” thanks to the fast SSD of the PS5.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be launching on the PlayStation 5 later this year. It’s said to be available sometime in “holiday 2020,” which is the same period as the PS5’s tentative launch.
