Illegear just updated two of its gaming laptops with AMD Ryzen 4000 processors: the Onyx V and Rogue. Retailing from only RM3,499, both of the laptops can be configured with a powerful Ryzen 7 4800H chip and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 GPU – reasonably capable hardware.
What differentiates the Onyx V and Rogue is just one hardware: display size. The Onyx V features a 15.6-inch screen, while the Rogue features a larger 17.3-inch panel. Both displays also support 120Hz refresh rate, making them ideal for gaming. Thin bezels surround their screens too, giving them a sleek, modern-looking design.
Out of the two gaming laptops, we’d argue the Onyx V is the more exciting one. Not only is it a more compact machine, it’s also a lighter, slimmer laptop. Its chassis measures only 19mm thin, and it tips the scales at 1.85kg. In comparison, the Rogue – due its bigger 17.3-inch screen – weighs 2.1kg with a 25mm profile. It’s also worth noting that the Rogue has a plastic build, compared to the Onyx V’s more premium aluminium chassis.
Now, let’s talk about CPU options of the Onyx V and Rogue. Both machines can be customised with a fast Ryzen 7 4800H octa-core processor or a more modest – but still very capable – Ryzen 5 4600H hexa-core chip. The base model of either laptops naturally comes with the latter processor, and upgrading to the Ryzen 7 option costs only RM299.
Given the small premium for the more powerful chip, it’s definitely worth it to go for the Ryzen 7 upgrade. After all, you will get two extra cores and higher peak clock speed.
In the GPU side of things, there are three choices available: GTX 1650, GTX 1650 Ti, and RTX 2060. If you want to do some serious gaming, you really do need to go for the RTX 2060 graphics card, which is a RM1,299 upgrade from the GTX 1650 option. The other two GPUs are good enough to run less demanding games without a hitch, but they’re not exactly in the same league as the far more powerful RTX 2060.
Other specifications of the Onyx V and Rogue include up to 64GB of DDR4 3200MHz RAM, two PCIe SSD slots (the Rogue gets an extra 2.5-inch SATA slot), single-zone RGB keyboards, and 47WHr batteries. Illegear has an option to upgrade the battery capacity to 63WHr, but the customisation page shows that it is currently out of stock.
The Illegear Onyx V and Illegear Rogue gaming laptops are now available for pre-order and customisation on the company’s online store; they are expected to start shipping to consumers in the middle of July next month. The Onyx V retails from RM3,499, while the Rogue starts at RM3,899.
