I Am Groot Review: Adorable, Fun, Trivial

Disney+ Hotstar has some pretty neat animated shorts. From Baymax! to Star Wars: Visions, most of the shorts are delightful, though some do fall flat. I Am Groot, on the other hand, tips the line between the two extremes.

While it’s not exactly as enthralling as Baymax!, in my opinion, I did thoroughly enjoy the five short episodes of I Am Groot. The series is by no means a must-watch – trivial, even – but if you do decide to watch it, you’ll be greeted by an adorable (and sometimes very angry) Baby Groot. What’s not to love?

Each episode of I Am Groot is between three to four minutes long, and they have a surprising amount of variety to them. One episode shows Groot fighting with an inanimate bonsai tree, while another explores his creative side with some arts and crafts; there’s even a scene of him surfing on a bar of soap.

Voiced by none other than Vin Diesel, Baby Groot is as expressive as he is in the main Guardians of the Galaxy films, even if his lines were just him saying…well, “I am Groot.” One of the Guardians (I won’t say who) also appears in the animated shorts, with a special voice cameo by James Gunn himself.

As expected of Marvel, the animation quality of I Am Groot is top-notch. You can see all the grooves and lines on Baby Groot’s face in close-up shots, and most scenes are rendered meticulously. There were a couple of parts here and there that looked a little jarring, but it’s nothing too bad.

My only real qualm with I Am Groot is the fact that there’s no overarching arc or plot to the series. Unlike Baymax!, which ultimately ties all of the shorts together in the last episode, all five episodes of I Am Groot are basically their own stories, for better or worse.

Whether you watch I Am Groot or not, it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things, especially in regards to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That is not to say it’s not worth your time: as trivial as the animated shorts are, that’s a part of the series’ charm.

I Am Groot doesn’t take itself too seriously, even if Baby Groot does get into some serious hijinks in the series. All five episodes of I Am Groot are now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
