If you’re looking for a brand new gaming laptop that offers good value for money, then you may be interested in the Acer Nitro 5. The Taiwanese company just brought in two new variants of the laptop, complete with a beefy Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU and a generous amount of storage.
Given that these new models of the Nitro 5 for the Malaysian market start at only RM4,499, you’re getting very good gaming performance for the money. After all, the GTX 1660 Ti is no slouch: in our testing, it is only marginally slower than the higher-end RTX 2060 GPU.
Granted, you don’t get RTX-specific features with the GTX 1660 Ti, but this may not matter to certain consumers – especially if they want higher frame rate instead of ray tracing.
Besides the GPU, the updated Nitro 5 also comes with a 15.6-inch 1080p IPS display with a fast 120Hz refresh rate. While that’s not the fastest screen we’ve seen on a gaming laptop, it’s quite an upgrade from conventional 60Hz panels. If you do want a faster display though, you can opt for the bigger 17.3-inch model with a 144Hz 1080p panel.
Under the hood of both Nitro 5 models is an Intel Core i7-9750H processor paired with 8GB of RAM. The Core i7 chip is more than adequate to not bottleneck the GTX 1660 Ti, and it’s powerful enough for other tasks too. However, you may want to upgrade the RAM to 16GB if you plan to do more than just gaming; 8GB is really the bare minimum.
Fortunately, storage capacity won’t be an issue with the Nitro 5 with its generous 512GB PCIe SSD. This gaming laptop also has reasonably good connectivity options, including a USB 3.1 Type-C connection, three USB-A ports (two USB 3.1, one USB 2.0), as well as an HDMI 2.0 output with HDCP support.
The two new Acer Nitro 5 models are now available for purchase in Malaysia. The 15.6-inch variant retails at only RM4,499, while the larger 17.3-inch option goes for RM5,299. Beyond the different screen size, both laptops sport identical hardware, so you’ll have to fork out quite a bit more money for the bigger screen.
With that in mind, the smaller 15.6-inch Nitro 5 offers the best value for money. On top of that, in conjunction with Lazada’s 8th Birthday Sale tomorrow on 27 March, this particular variant will be discounted to RM4,184 – that’s exactly RM315 worth of savings. Quite a good deal for a gaming laptop of this calibre.
