Sony Launches FX5 Cinema Camera, Available for Pre-Order From RM22,999

After much anticipation from filmmakers and videographers alike, Sony has finally revealed the FX5, the latest addition to the company’s Cinema Line.

The FX5 is built around a new full-frame, fully stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor paired with the BIONZ XR2 image processing engine and a dedicated AI processing unit. Shooting in S-Log3 delivers over 15 stops of dynamic range, and three base ISO settings at ISO 800, ISO 4000 and ISO 12800 cover a wide range of lighting conditions.

The Dual Gain Shooting feature from the A7R VI makes its FX series debut here, maximising sensor performance for smoother gradation and wider latitude with reduced noise in the shadows.

For the first time in the FX series, the FX5 supports Open Gate shooting with 3:2 full-pixel readout across the entire sensor area, alongside a range of image scan modes including 17:9, 16:9 and Super 35mm.

In-camera recording in X-OCN, Sony’s proprietary 16-bit scene-linear RAW format, is also new to the FX series, with support for X-OCN LT alongside newly added X-OCN C1 and X-OCN C2 codecs for reduced file sizes and streamlined post-production. The camera shoots 5K up to 60fps, 4K up to 120fps and FHD up to 240fps.

AF is powered by AI-based human pose estimation that tracks eyes, head and body position for subject detection even in low light, alongside Real-time Tracking for following subjects. Anamorphic lens support covers 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x and 2.0x squeeze ratios via a built-in de-squeeze function.

Five-axis in-body optical image stabilisation now includes an expanded roll correction range approximately twice that of the previous system, with Active Mode and a new Dynamic Active Mode for additional stabilisation during handheld shooting.

The monitor is a 3.5-inch 2.76-million-dot 4-axis multi-angle touchscreen, larger than that of the FX3, with full articulation in multiple directions and brightness adjustable across 15 steps. The BIG6 home screen consolidates key settings including frame rate, exposure and LUTs, with a menu system designed for consistent operability alongside CineAlta cameras and the FX6.

The camera is compatible with the high-capacity NP-SA100 battery at 2,670mAh, supports USB Power Delivery for extended shooting, carries a wired LAN terminal for remote operation and features dust and moisture resistance.

Two optional accessories launch alongside the camera. The DVF-EL1 detachable OLED viewfinder carries a 7.07-million-dot panel with DCI-P3 colour gamut, 10-bit HDR display, approximately 0.9x magnification and a tilt mechanism from 0 to 90 degrees upward.

The XLR-H2 handle unit adds two XLR and TRS combo terminals for up to four channels of audio input with dual AD converters, supporting in-camera recording at up to 96kHz and 32-bit float via the Multi Interface Shoe.

The Sony FX5 is available for pre-order now at RM22,999 for body only and RM25,999 with the handle unit.
