The fourth-generation Proton Saga has officially launched in Malaysia, bringing significant mechanical and technological updates to the national carmaker’s longest-running nameplate. The lineup has been streamlined to three variants: Standard, Executive, and Premium, with prices starting from RM38,990.

This new pricing structure represents a notable increase over the previous generation. The entry point to the Saga ownership experience is now roughly RM4000 – RM5000 more expensive than before. However, Proton justifies this premium with substantial upgrades in powertrain and safety technology.

The biggest headline is the retirement of the 1.3-litre engine. All variants are now powered by a new 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder i-GT engine, producing 120 PS and 150 Nm of torque. This is a significant bump in output that should address previous complaints regarding power.

Transmission choices have also diverged based on the variant. The Standard and Executive trims utilize a four-speed automatic transmission (4AT), while the range-topping Premium receives a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). According to Proton, this new powertrain setup improves fuel efficiency by roughly 14%, with the CVT variant rated at 4.9L/100km and the 4AT variants returning 5.1L/100km.

Structurally, the car sits on what Proton calls the “Advanced Modular Architecture” (AMA). While it traces its lineage back to existing architecture, it utilizes a Reinforced Safety Structure (RESS) to improve rigidity and crash safety.

Visually, the Saga adopts a “Next-gen Style” design language. The front fascia sports a new grille featuring a ‘Sulaman Songket’ pattern, similar to the treatment seen on the latest X50. A welcome standard feature across the entire range is the inclusion of LED projector headlights with integrated daytime running lights.

Moving to the rear, all variants feature LED taillights with a ‘PROTON’ script across the boot lid. The Premium variant differentiates itself further with a full-width LED light strip and a set of dual-tone 15-inch alloy wheels. The Executive shares the 15-inch sizing but in a single-tone finish, while the Standard rides on smaller 14-inch alloys.

The cabin has undergone a comprehensive revision, featuring a “Pantai Waves” 3D dashboard pattern and “Congkak” inspired air vents. A 7-inch TFT digital gauge cluster is now standard across all variants.

However, connectivity is tiered. The Standard model makes do with a basic audio system, while the Executive and Premium variants gain a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen. When paired with the digital cluster, this creates a “16-inch integrated dual-screen” look. Finally, this system also supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Comfort features also vary, with the Standard model offering fabric seats and a urethane steering wheel. The Executive upgrades to textured fabric and adds extra USB ports, while the Premium offers a leatherette-wrapped steering wheel, dual-tone leatherette seats, and a more convenient lever-type height adjuster for the driver.

Safety specifications show the widest gap between trims. The Standard variant is equipped with two airbags, which is basic for 2026. The Premium variant, however, introduces Level 1 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to the Saga for the first time.

This suite includes Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Change Assist. It also adds Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and Door Opening Warning, utilizing a six-airbag setup for maximum protection.

The all-new Proton Saga starts at RM38,990 for the Standard, RM44,990 for the Executive, and RM49,990 for the Premium. Buyers can choose from five colours: Ruby Red, Armour Silver, Snow White, and two new additions: Space Grey and Marine Blue. Included in the price is a five-year or 150,000 km warranty and three free labour services.

To encourage early adoption, Proton is offering a RM1,000 launch rebate valid until 31 December 2025. Knocking the prices down to RM37,990, RM43,990, and RM48,990 for the respective three variants.

There are also additional incentives, including a trade-in support package offering up to RM2,000 for vehicles older than 15 years, and financing rates starting from 2.6% per annum. An upgraded insurance programme covers flood relief up to RM2,000 and personal accident coverage for passengers.
