MKBHD Shuts Down Wallpaper App ‘Panels’, Will Open-Source the Code in 2026

Just over a year after launching Panels, MKBHD has announced that the wallpaper-download app will be shut down on 31 December 2025.

Panels first launched in September 2024, but quickly faced criticism due to its high subscription price, initially costing RM61 per month, a steep fee for an app focused solely on wallpaper downloads. A month later, the price was reduced to RM8.99 per month.

MKBHD said the team was unable to develop Panels into what they had originally envisioned, leading to the decision to discontinue it entirely. Moving forward, the app’s source code will be released as open source on 4 January 2026, allowing anyone interested to build upon it.

All user data will be permanently deleted by the shutdown date, though users will be able to keep any wallpapers they’ve already downloaded forever.
