In a surprise move, OpenAI has unveiled its own AI-integrated web browser, called ChatGPT Atlas. As expected, the browser comes with ChatGPT built directly into it, offering a more seamless way to browse and interact with the web through AI assistance. Currently available exclusively for macOS, ChatGPT Atlas will soon be released for Windows, Android, and iOS users.

ChatGPT Atlas features a clean, chat-focused interface, allowing users to ask questions, browse websites, or perform searches directly through ChatGPT. When using the search bar, results can appear either as AI-generated summaries — similar to ChatGPT’s usual responses — or as traditional web links, giving users the flexibility to choose how they explore information.

Each browser tab includes an “Ask ChatGPT” button that opens a dedicated sidebar, where users can inquire about the webpage they’re viewing. Additionally, an optional ChatGPT Agent mode lets the AI perform actions on a page, such as summarizing, extracting information, or executing specific commands within that tab.

OpenAI emphasizes that ChatGPT Atlas only interacts with the content of the current tab and cannot access external files or data outside it, maintaining user privacy. The browser also comes with a built-in “Memory” feature, enabling it to remember preferences and improve the browsing experience over time, along with a standard Incognito mode for private sessions.

For now, ChatGPT Atlas is available for macOS users and can be downloaded via OpenAI’s official website. Users will need to sign in with their ChatGPT account before accessing the browser. Versions for other platforms are expected to follow soon.
