Automation may be heading for the e-commerce industry next. According to an internal document obtained by The New York Times, Amazon plans to replace over 600,000 human workers with robots by 2033, marking one of the largest automation shifts in corporate history.

In the first phase, as many as 160,000 jobs could be automated as early as 2027, potentially cutting operational costs by 30 cents per package. Between 2025 and 2027, Amazon expects to save up to USD 12.6 billion through robotic integration across its logistics network. The company’s long-term goal is to have robots handle 75% of its operations.

Amazon has been a pioneer in warehouse robotics, investing heavily in automation technologies for nearly a decade. This year alone, it announced the deployment of one million robots powered by its DeepFleet AI system, as well as ongoing development of Vulcan, a robotic arm designed to handle packages delicately.
