Facebook has announced that it will discontinue the Messenger desktop app for Windows and macOS in December 2025. The shutdown affects only the desktop versions, while users on mobile devices and the web app will remain unaffected.

While Meta did not provide a specific reason for the decision, it’s likely due to low user adoption, which may not justify the ongoing development and maintenance costs of the desktop app. Once support ends, users who attempt to open the Messenger app on desktop will be redirected to the Facebook desktop platform, where they can continue messaging via the integrated chat interface.

Messenger remains one of Meta’s core messaging platforms alongside WhatsApp, and more recently, Threads, which has begun incorporating its own direct messaging features. For now, Messenger will continue functioning as usual on Android, iOS, and the web, while desktop users prepare for the transition later this year.
