Malaysia to Require Social Media Platforms to Enforce Age Limits – Users Under 13 Will No Longer Be Allowed to Create Accounts

Malaysia is set to mandate social media platforms to implement strict age restrictions, ensuring that users under the age of 13 are not allowed to have accounts, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
The initiative aims to strengthen online child protection and enforce responsible platform governance in the country. To move forward with this plan, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will be meeting with major social media companies next week to discuss the steps toward implementation.
Fahmi stated that this move aligns with the government’s commitment to protect children online and ensure that digital platforms enforce their own existing community and safety guidelines, which often already specify a minimum user age but are inconsistently applied.
By making this requirement mandatory, Malaysia hopes to create a safer digital environment for young users and encourage tech companies to take greater accountability in safeguarding minors on their platforms.
