The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, or ‘G-Wagon’ as its affectionately known as, is a vehicle that needs no introduction. The iconic luxury SUV, with its distinctive boxy design, is known for its rugged off-road capabilities and its evolution into a coveted status symbol over the years.

Today, the G-Class has been electrified and reborn as the Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ. While it retains the unmistakable silhouette and design DNA of the G-Class, this new model reimagines the vehicle for the electric era, powered by the brand’s own EQ electric vehicle technology.

The G 580 EQ promises a fully electric off-road experience with zero compromise. It brings together cutting-edge features such as G-TURN, G-STEERING, and a maximum range of up to 473 km on a single charge, according to WLTP standards. All of this is delivered while preserving the raw, rugged personality that defines the G-Class.

This is also the first mass-produced Mercedes-Benz vehicle to feature individual-wheel drive. Four motors are integrated into the vehicle’s ladder frame, with two motors housed at the front and rear axles respectively. Each motor produces a peak output of 108 kW, resulting in a combined maximum output of 432 kW and a formidable 1,164 Nm of torque. With this level of performance, the G 580 EQ can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds and has a top speed of 180 km/h.

The vehicle houses a 116 kWh battery that supports up to 473 km of range. Charging is just as capable, with 11 kW AC charging providing a full charge in about 12 hours, while 200 kW DC fast charging allows the battery to go from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 32 minutes.

Off-road capability remains a cornerstone of the G 580 EQ, enhanced now with exclusive electric-powered features. G-TURN allows the vehicle to execute a full 720-degree spin in place on loose or unpaved surfaces, making tight turns or reversals easier in demanding conditions. G-STEERING helps reduce the turning circle when driving off-road or in narrow spaces by controlling drive torque at the individual wheels, eliminating the need for multi-point turns in many situations. This function operates at speeds of up to 25 km/h.

G-ROAR, meanwhile, gives the new electric G-Class an acoustic personality to match its performance. Drawing inspiration from the AMG family’s signature V8 growl, this adaptive sound system shifts its tone depending on the drive mode. In Comfort mode, the sound is more restrained, while Sport mode unleashes a more aggressive, thrilling note.

The new Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ and the limited G 580 EQ EDITION ONE are priced from RM958,888 and RM998,888 respectively. These prices are on the road, excluding insurance, and include a wallbox charger with installation.

Those interested in experiencing the new G 580 EQ in person, including its impressive 40-degree incline climb and full G-TURN demonstration, can visit Raintree Plaza at The Exchange TRX from 27 to 29 June 2025.
