Proton e.MAS 5 Previewed At Malaysia Autoshow 2025
May 8, 2025 Jin Soh

We are live here at Malaysia Autoshow 2025 and Proton has just given us a glimpse at its second EV — its name now official: the Proton E.MAS 5. And we mean a literal glimpse, as the car is fully wrapped in camouflage (much like the E.MAS 7 was when it was first teased) and heavily tinted on the windows.

Despite the disguise, it’s still quite clear that the E.MAS 5 shares several design cues with the Geely Star Wish, or Xingyuan as it’s known in China. The headlights, front end, and overall shape are all reminiscent of its Geely counterpart.

No technical details have been revealed for the E.MAS 5 just yet, but looking at the Xingyuan gives us some idea of what to expect. In China, the base model features a 58kW (79PS), 130Nm rear-mounted electric motor with up to 310km of range from a 30.1kWh battery — though that’s based on the more optimistic CLTC standard.

A higher-end variant of the Xingyuan gets an 85kW (116PS), 150Nm motor and a larger 40.2kWh battery, good for up to 410km of CLTC-rated range.

The E.MAS 5 is expected to launch by the end of 2025, likely to rival Perodua’s upcoming EV, which is projected to be an affordable model priced between RM50,000 and RM90,000.
