Instagram Reportedly Developing a Standalone Reels App to Compete with TikTok
February 27, 2025 AF

Instagram, which started as a photo-sharing platform, has evolved significantly over the years—first adding Stories to rival Snapchat and later introducing Reels in response to TikTok’s rising popularity. Now, a new report suggests that Instagram is considering launching a separate, dedicated Reels app to offer a TikTok-like experience where users can endlessly scroll through short-form videos.

Details about the standalone Reels app are still unclear, including whether it will feature e-commerce integrations or other unique tools. However, this move could help Meta compete more aggressively with TikTok by giving Reels its own platform.

Beyond this, Meta is also working on a video editing app called Edits, likely in response to the TikTok and CapCut bans in the U.S.. Meanwhile, under Instagram’s umbrella, Meta continues to expand its social media portfolio, including Threads, its X (formerly Twitter) alternative.
