OpenAI’s First AI Hardware Will Be Voice-First, Not Screen-First
February 4, 2025 AF

Sam Altman has officially confirmed that OpenAI is working on a physical AI device, and it’s shaping up to be something very different from a smartphone. The project is rumored to be a collaboration with Jony Ive, though details remain scarce.

One major highlight? The device will run on OpenAI’s custom-designed chip. According to a report from The Elec, Altman revealed that the AI device will be voice-first, relying heavily on voice commands instead of traditional controls. It’s also being developed in partnership with multiple tech companies, hinting at a broader industry collaboration.

Looking at the market, physical AI devices haven’t had the best track record. Products like the Rabbit R1 and Humane AI Pin struggled to gain traction, while Meta’s AI-powered Ray-Ban smart glasses have been a hit, selling over 1 million units.

So, if OpenAI releases a ChatGPT-powered gadget with a fresh and practical design, would you consider buying one? Or will AI remain something you prefer to use on your smartphone?
