Acer Nitro KG241Y P3 Review – Fast 180Hz Gaming Monitor for RM379
January 28, 2025 Andrew Cheng

Affordable gaming monitors have come a long way. Gone are the days where you have to pay a premium just for a monitor with high refresh rate and support for adaptive sync. Take the Acer Nitro KG241Y P3: an affordable 23.8-inch Full HD gaming monitor launched under the Acer Nitro KG1 series with fast 180Hz refresh rate for only RM379.

Of course, given the budget-friendly nature of the Nitro KG241Y, it does come with some sacrifices here and there, such as the use of a VA panel. Nonetheless, if you’re on a tight budget and you need a fast 1080p gaming monitor, the Nitro KG241Y is definitely worth considering.

What It Is

For RM379, which is the official retail price of the monitor, the Nitro KG241Y P3 offers great value for money; even more so if you can get it at a lower price point. For that kind of money, it features a 23.8-inch 1920 x 1080 VA panel with fast 180Hz refresh rate, 0.5ms pixel response time, a DisplayPort, and one HDMI slot.

On top of that, the Nitro KG241Y also comes with support for AMD FreeSync Premium, a variable refresh rate technology to minimise screen tearing. There are built-in stereo speakers too, though the audio quality is only…serviceable, though it will work in a pinch.

As for the stand of the Nitro KG241Y, it only has tilt adjustment, so you cannot adjust the height of the monitor. On the bright side, it supports the VESA standard, so the monitor is compatible with third-party VESA monitor arms.

The Good Stuff

As the Nitro KG241Y is a gaming monitor, let’s talk about its gaming performance first, which is great! Thanks to the 1080p resolution of the 23.8-inch VA panel, an adequately powerful gaming PC can definitely take full advantage of the fast 180Hz refresh rate.

Besides that, I didn’t notice any screen tearing either when gaming with the Nitro KG241Y. This can be attributed to the AMD FreeSync Premium technology of the monitor; a nice feature to have on such a budget-friendly monitor.

But what about the display quality of the Nitro KG241Y’s VA panel? Well, it has a good amount of contrast for a reasonably pleasant viewing experience. Sure, it doesn’t offer the most vibrant colours or widest viewing angles – especially in comparison to a more expensive IPS screen – but I do think the image quality is good enough for most folks.

I’d also like to touch on the on-screen display (OSD) of the Nitro KG241Y, which is really quite intuitive. The joystick control on the back of the monitor, which also acts as the power button, makes it easy to navigate through the OSD. It’s a nice little feature to have, which isn’t typically found on most affordable monitors.

And then there’s the stand of the Nitro KG241Y. Although there is no height adjustment, I appreciate the fact that it has a small footprint. For those with a small desk, you won’t have to worry about not having enough desk space for the monitor.

The Bad Stuff

There is really only one main shortcoming of the Nitro KG241Y: the VA panel. While it has good contrast ratio, the screen still looks a tad washed out with muted colours. Viewing angles are not great either as colours shift when looking at the screen from an angle.

If you plan on using the Nitro KG241Y in a bright environment, do note that the maximum brightness of the VA screen caps out at 250 nits, which isn’t particularly high. For the best gaming or viewing experience with this monitor, you do have to turn down the lights.

Is It Worth It?

Despite the limitations of its VA panel, the Acer Nitro KG241Y P3 is still an affordable gaming monitor that is worth every penny. After all, it has fast 180Hz refresh rate, AMD FreeSync Premium support, intuitive OSD controls, and most of all, an attractive RM379 price tag.

If you can get the Nitro KG241Y lower than its RM379 official price during special sales, it’s a no-brainer purchase for gamers who are shopping for a budget-friendly gaming monitor.
