No More Free Toll for Festive Seasons
January 21, 2025 Andrew Cheng

If you’re hoping the government will be granting toll exemption for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration, well, we have not-so-great news. Moving forward, it is unlikely for the government to grant free toll during festive seasons, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

Nanta added that this is based on a Cabinet decision, and that last year (2024) will be the last time the government will grant toll exemption for festive seasons. “This is since we decided to streamline the subsidies that we give out as we are moving towards targeted subsidies,” said Nanta in a report by The Star.

For the past couple of years (2023 and 2024), the government granted free toll during festive seasons like Hari Raya and Christmas. In the most recent toll exemption for Christmas last year on 23 and 24 December, the government reportedly spent RM38 million. Nanta also mentioned that the government forked out RM93 million to give road users free toll during the Hari Raya period in 2023.
