Nintendo Switch 2 Official – Bigger Display, Magnetic Joy-Con, 2025 Release
January 17, 2025 Andrew Cheng

Well, it’s finally here; sort of. Enter the Nintendo Switch 2, which has been officially teased by Nintendo itself. Just as leaks and rumours have suggested, the Japanese company’s new console does have a bigger display with (what appears to be) magnetic Joy-Con controllers, and it is slated to be released sometime in 2025.

While the overall design of the Switch 2 is strikingly similar to its predecessor, there are some changes here and there. The Joy-Con controllers, for one, no longer slide into the console. Instead, it looks to attach magnetically to the main body, and there’s a new button on the right Joy-Con too.

Aside from that, the Switch 2 itself is also quite a bit bigger than the original Switch with a larger display, though exact specifications of the panel have not been revealed yet. There is also a much wider U-shaped kickstand on the back of the console now that can be adjusted to different angles seamlessly.

Naturally, the Switch 2 will be able to play games made for the original Switch as well, whether they are in physical or digital formats. However, Nintendo added that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.”

More details on the Nintendo Switch 2 will be released on 2 April 2025. “Experience events” for the upcoming console will also be held at selected cities worldwide, and it runs until June; perhaps that is when the Switch 2 will be officially released too.
