When did Pepsi release a…Smart Can? Well, back in June this year, and it’s not really a can that can – excuse the pun – hold any liquid. Rather, it’s a can wrapped with a flexible screen (likely OLED), and it is somehow coming to Malaysia.
In our usual routine search of SIRIM’s database, we spotted the Pepsi Smart Can registered under Q Man Trading just today on 21 November. All electronic devices officially sold in Malaysia have to be certified by SIRIM first, so now that the Smart Can has been approved by the certification body, it can technically be sold locally already.
So what exactly is the Pepsi Smart Can? According to the Chief Design Officer of PepsiCo, Mauro Porcini, it’s developed by the brand’s global beverage design team in Ireland. Touted as a CANvas for creativity – that’s a pretty good pun – the Smart Can is basically a concept product. The wraparound display can supposedly show content streams from influencers and figures in gaming, sports, and music as well.
Now that the Pepsi Smart Can has been certified by SIRIM, does that mean it will eventually be sold in Malaysia? Well, we don’t think so. Chances are, the Smart Can is brought in here as a promotional tool, though it’s possible some local content creators will get one to create videos that can be displayed on the can – PepsiCo did say an initial group of 1,000 such individuals will receive the Smart Can.
