MTG Foundations Unboxing – Great for New & Old Players Alike
November 18, 2024 Andrew Cheng

Magic: The Gathering’s latest set, Foundations, is mainly catered to new players. After all, it’s in the name of the set itself, with various bundles that are geared towards beginners. On top of that, all the cards featured in the set are also Standard legal until 2029, so you won’t have to worry about set rotation for quite a while with Foundations.

In conjunction with the release of the set, Wizards of the Coast sent us a few Foundations products to unbox, including the Beginner Box, Starter Collection, and Prerelease Pack. If you’re thinking of getting into MTG, these products should pique your interest – there are also some iconic reprints that will appeal to long-time Magic players.

Let’s start with the Beginner Box, which is priced at RM124.99 from Wizards’ official store on Shopee. It comes with “all the essentials for a quintessential Magic experience,” as the company puts it, and it comes with 10 themed Jumpstart decks, two gameboard playmats, and of course, a reference guide booklet to get new players started.

Whether you want to learn or teach someone MTG, the Beginner Box is the ideal point of entry. Plus, it’s not too expensive either, and you get quite a number cards to add to your collection. There are more than enough cards to build a few solid 60-card decks with this bundle.

Once you’re up to speed with the Beginner Box, the Starter Collection is a great step up. It comes with a collection of over 350 cards for you to start building your own deck. While it does cost quite a bit more than the Beginner Box with a RM230.99 price tag from Wizards, you do get (literally) more for your money with this product.

Unlike the Beginner Box, the Starter Collection also includes three Play Boosters. If you’re lucky enough, you may be able to pull some high-value cards. Unfortunately, we weren’t quite as lucky; our best pull is Abyssal Harvester, which is currently going for $3.49 (about RM15) on Card Kingdom.

But hey, the Play Boosters are just a nice bonus. Aside from that, the Starter Collection also includes some foil Commander staples (Sol Ring, Command Tower, Arcane Signet), and a neat Click Wheel to keep track of your life total in games.

Last but not least is the Prerelease Pack we all know and love. As usual, it includes six Play Boosters, a traditional foil year-stamped rare or mythic rare Foundations promo card, a deck box, and a spindown life counter in a random colourway.

The highlight of a Prerelease Pack are certainly the six Play Boosters that can be used to build a deck for the Limited format. Now, as a (relatively) long-time player of the game, this is really our favourite product to unbox as it gives us a chance to get some of the iconic reprints in the Foundations set.

And…well, luckily for us, we got a copy of Doubling Season! This particular card from the Foundations set is currently going for a cool $27.99 on Card Kingdom, which comes up to about RM125.

And that is our unboxing of the Prerelease Pack, Starter Collection, and Beginner Box of Magic: The Gathering’s latest set, Foundations. These products can now be purchased at your local game store, and aside from the aforementioned products, Foundations is also offered in Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Foundations Jumpstart Boosters, and Bundles.
