Yes, you can buy a motorcycle on Shopee. Yes, it’s a legitimate, streel-legal motorcycle. And yes, it’s virtually the same as buying a motorcycle from a conventional brick and mortar store, though I had the bike delivered to my doorstep…in only one day. For free.
Looking back, it’s almost surreal that I bought a full-fledged motorcycle online through Shopee. On top of that, the e-commerce platform even offers 0% credit card instalment plans of up to 36 months with selected banks, which is the main reason I bought my Honda ADV160 with Shopee.
It’s worth noting that buying a motorcycle on Shopee isn’t a particularly new thing. In fact, the service was actually launched back in 2019. So what’s the process of purchasing a motorcycle on Shopee like? Basically, it’s as simple as buying anything on the e-commerce platform. Find a listing that you like – there’s even a dedicated page for purchasing motorcycles and relevant accessories – add it to your cart, and check out your order.
As mentioned, Shopee offers credit card instalment plans of various tenures for motorcycle purchases. Those who hold Public Bank or CIMB credit cards can select instalment plans of up to 36 months, while Maybank credit card owners can split their bike purchase to 18 months of payments – all at 0% interest. Sounds great, right?
Well, sort of. The thing is, most, if not all motorcycle shops on Shopee charge a fee for those who opt for credit card instalment plans. Still, it’s better than signing up for credit services at physical shops that usually charge much, much higher interests.
Anyway, for my Honda ADV160, I went with YesRide, which has a physical shop in Kajang, Selangor. Not only does the retailer offer free shipping throughout Malaysia, its listings are also on-the-road prices with insurance included, though some bikes come with third-party insurance instead of first-party. Do check the description carefully on what kind of insurance is included for each bike.
However, as I was opting for the 0% credit card instalment plan with the ADV160, I do have to pay additional fees on top of the listed price, which can go up to 6% (in the case of YesRide) for folks who choose the 36-month payment plan. Yes, not exactly an ideal situation – and admittedly, a tad misleading – but hey, as I’ve said before, it’s still better than taking up credit services that charge much higher interest rates.
Once I’ve made the payment, I just needed to send my information to YesRide for JPJ registration. All of the paperwork, including insurance, are handled by the shop. I placed my order on Friday morning, and much to my surprise, the ADV160 was delivered to my residence on Saturday morning; that’s faster delivery than most of my purchases on Shopee!
Of course, the Honda ADV160 I received from YesRide is completely new with zero total mileage, and it is in proper working condition. I even asked if the shop could install a crash bar on the bike after I made the initial payment, and YesRide obliged accordingly after I’ve made a separate payment directly to the shop. All in all, it’s a very pleasant shopping experience.
Now, as for the ADV160 itself, I chose to get the bike for easier commute around the city. My primary mode of transportation has always been a car for a good 14 years now, and after much research, I ended up with the ADV160. In my opinion, it offers great value for money with a sophisticated suspension setup at this price point – it has telescopic forks on the front with twin shock absorbers on the back – and as it is a scooter with a CVT gearbox, I don’t have to bother about shifting gears in heavy KL traffic either.
If you’re in the market for a new motorcycle, buying one from Shopee is definitely an option worth considering. Granted, making a purchase of this kind through an e-commerce platform may seem intimidating at first, but after doing so myself, I can personally attest to the credibility of the Shopee service.
At least, that’s my experience with YesRide specifically. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be going around the city on my ADV160.
