The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has decided on the telco that will be building Malaysia’s second 5G network, and it is U Mobile. In order to set up the new network, the company will be working with other entities, including CelcomDigi and Telekom Malaysia (TM).
On top of that, in line with U Mobile’s commitment to the national agenda, the telco will be reducing its foreign majority shareholding to 20%. This will ensure “greater Malaysian control and inviting participation from local investors,” as the telco puts it.
The government previously announced Malaysia’s transition to a 5G Dual Network model from the current 5G Single Wholesale Network model. This is done to ensure that DNB has no monopoly on the local 5G infrastructure, while also establishing healthy competition in the telecommunications sector and improving 5G coverage on our shores.
Of course, other telco companies have responded to U Mobile winning the tender to build Malaysia’s second 5G network. Both CelcomDigi and Maxis say they will consider their options moving forward, and Maxis even mentioned it will “engage with MCMC to understand the rationale for their decision.”
