Current Huawei laptops running on Windows may be the last of their kind. According to Huawei Chairman Richard Yu – as reported by Huawei Central – upcoming PCs from the Chinese company will be installed with HarmonyOS instead of Windows.
This is in response to the US sanctions placed in 2019, preventing Huawei from accessing key components and software, including Microsoft’s Windows operating system. It’s worth noting that the HarmonyOS software branding has been used for Huawei’s Android-based products, though a PC version of the operating system has not materialised just yet.
According to earlier reports, Huawei will be releasing HarmonyOS Next by the end of the year; that’s the name that will be used for the PC version of the software. It will not be based on Android, and judging by screenshots released by the company, it looks to be sporting a macOS-like user interface.
Given that the majority of PC makers rely on Windows, it’s certainly bold of Huawei to develop its own operating system for its range of laptops. Of course, the company has the resources and expertise to do so. After all, Huawei continues to be in the smartphone business five years after the US sanctions were imposed.
